When I became a mother in February of 2019, I knew I wanted to hire a photographer for a newborn session to capture those fleeting first moments with our daughter.

Our whole experience with the photographer was disappointing, to say the least. Our session only lasted 30 minutes and the whole thing was a blur. I had just given birth. I was exhausted, scared, and
at my most vulnerable.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was desperately seeking connection with anyone who understood first-hand what I was going through. I did not get that from my photographer (even though she was also a mother, and her youngest was only 9 months old.)

On top of that, we ended up with photos that did not represent us. Those pretty pictures of everyone looking at the camera and smiling are so not who we are. When I look at them now,
they just feel sort of... empty.

I believe this happened because the photographer didn’t take the time to get to know us - not before or during the session.

My Story

A few months later, I decided to start my own Family Photography business, with the caveat that I would only take candid photos that told a story. No emotion or interaction would ever be manufactured. Everything would be REAL.

I also make it a point to learn about the families I collaborate with. Incidentally, I happen to love meeting new parents! Sharing horror stories, past experiences, and just connecting with other parents is my favorite part of the job!

Finally, I never, ever take it for granted when I'm invited into a family's private space because I know now sacred that is.

My mission is to provide my families with emotionally resonant photographs that they will always connect with, no matter how much time goes by.

I am committed to creating a SAFE space for all of my clients, regardless of your race, gender, sexual orientation, religious background, and abilities. I will do my very best to represent you authentically and respectfully through my images.

My doors and my arms are open to you!

"No one has ever so perfectly captured our baby's spirit and essence."

"We had the most wonderful experience with Marj Cohen when she documented our growing family! She has a wonderfully kind and joyful personality and we felt comfortable being completely ourselves throughout the shoot. Her exquisite photos capture the realness of our family and the reality of this time in our baby's life. No one has ever so perfectly captured our baby's spirit and essence and we will treasure these photos forever."

"Now our son will be able to see how much love he brought to our home."

"These photos are so special! Many of these moments would have been stored only in our memories and probably become fuzzy over time. Now our son will be able to look at them and see what it was like, our first year as a family and how much love he brought to our home! Thank you Marj for such a great experience!"

"[Marjorie] spent time just talking to us and making us comfortable."

"I am so happy with all of the beautiful photos! I can't stop looking at them. I was nervous about it being a candid photo shoot because who can truly be candid in front of a camera? Marj was great at easing us into it. She spent time just talking to us and making us comfortable then before we knew it she was snapping away. We had a lot of fun. Thanks, Marj!!! Cant wait to work with you again!"
